Our History
More Than A Century of Service
For more than 100 years, the Kiwanis Club of Vidalia has been bringing together community-minded individuals with a shared commitment to service. The club was organized in 1919 and officially chartered in 1921, making it the oldest civic club in Vidalia and Toombs County. From its earliest days, the club has worked to strengthen the community, support local youth, and create traditions that continue to make an impact today.
1919
A Legacy Begins
The Kiwanis Club of Vidalia was organized in 1919. That same year, the club assisted in the development of Boy Scout Troop 933, beginning a relationship that has continued for generations.
Troop 933 is one of the oldest Boy Scout troops in the state of Georgia, and the Kiwanis Club of Vidalia has continuously sponsored the troop since its founding. In 1995, a Boy Scout Hut was built for the club and troop, further strengthening this longstanding partnership.

Officially Chartered
Two years after its organization, the Kiwanis Club of Vidalia was officially chartered in 1921. More than a century later, the club continues the tradition of service established by its earliest members.

Honoring Outstanding Citizens
In 1943, the Kiwanis Club of Vidalia originated the prestigious Vidalia Citizen of the Year Award. The recognition became an important community tradition and was later co-sponsored with other major men's civic clubs. The program eventually joined with the Vidalia Women’s Club Lady of the Year recognition to become the Citizens of the Year program celebrated today.
The Vidalia Onion Run Begins
In 1977, another lasting Kiwanis tradition was born—the Vidalia Onion Run. Held each spring in conjunction with the Vidalia Onion Festival, the event has grown to include a one-mile Fun Run, 5K run/walk, and 10K road race/walk. Decades after its beginning, the Onion Run remains an important part of the club's community involvement.

What began in 1919 has grown into a club of more than 100 members united by a commitment to service. While programs and community needs have changed throughout the decades, the heart of the Kiwanis Club of Vidalia remains the same: bringing people together to make our community stronger and create brighter futures for the generations that follow.
